The Colorado Ace Hardware Team outside of one location

The Town of Chino Valley sits strategically between Arizona’s outdoor recreation hotspots—close enough to Prescott and Sedona to benefit from tourist traffic, but far enough off the beaten path to offer something increasingly rare: authentic, uncrowded outdoor adventure with genuine small-town hospitality.

Yet for years, Chino Valley was the place visitors drove through, not to.

Despite offering scenic UTV trails, dark skies perfect for stargazing, rolling hills ideal for hiking, and a growing community of outdoor enthusiasts, the town lacked a cohesive tourism identity. Without a clear brand story or digital presence, potential visitors had no way to discover what made Chino Valley special—or even know it existed as a destination.

With rural co-op grant funding through the Arizona Office of Tourism, Chino Valley partnered with Mountain Mojo Group to establish its first-ever comprehensive visitation brand.

The goal: transform from a pass-through town into a recognized destination that attracts outdoor adventurers while strengthening local business visibility and community pride.

OUR CHALLENGE

Building a Tourism Brand from Scratch in an Established Outdoor Recreation Market

Challenges

Chino Valley faced the unique challenge of creating tourism awareness in a region already dominated by well-established destinations.

The town needed to:

  • Define their tourism identity without competing directly with nearby Prescott and Sedona, but rather positioning as the authentic alternative

  • Attract outdoor recreation enthusiasts who were seeking less crowded, more genuine experiences than traditional Arizona tourist destinations

  • Unify community vision around tourism goals while maintaining the small-town character that residents valued

  • Create digital visibility for a destination that had virtually no online tourism presence

  • Balance visitor attraction with local business support, ensuring tourism efforts benefited existing community businesses

  • Establish credibility as a legitimate outdoor destination despite limited previous marketing efforts

  • Appeal to multiple visitor types—from UTV enthusiasts and campers to families seeking outdoor education and remote workers looking for scenic retreats.

Solution

Mountain Mojo Group developed a comprehensive destination branding strategy that positioned Chino Valley as “Arizona’s Outdoor Fun Place”—a welcoming community where adventure meets breathing room. We crafted a brand identity that celebrated what made Chino Valley genuinely different: authentic outdoor experiences, community hospitality, and the freedom to explore without fighting crowds.

Our approach began with extensive community research to understand both resident perspectives and visitor motivations. We conducted stakeholder interviews, analyzed tourism patterns in Northern Arizona, and developed detailed visitor personas representing everyone from Phoenix families seeking weekend adventures to remote workers looking for scenic home bases.

The brand strategy established three core pillars that would guide all messaging and visual identity decisions:

  • Off the Beaten Path: Emphasizing laid-back atmosphere, less crowded trails, and authentic exploration opportunities
  • Epic Scenery: Highlighting rolling hills, dark skies, and views that feel both vast and personal
  • One-Stop Stay: Showcasing the complete experience from trails to taverns, with a welcoming community where every visitor feels like a local

This foundation informed every aspect of the project, from logo design concepts to website architecture, ensuring consistent messaging across all touchpoints while giving the community a clear framework for future tourism marketing decisions.

Branding & visual Identity

Branding Arizona’s Outdoor Fun Place:
Where Adventure Meets Breathing Room

The heart of Chino Valley’s transformation lay in developing a visual identity system that could authentically represent the town’s outdoor character while appealing to adventure-seeking visitors. We created a comprehensive brand family that included three distinct logo variations, each designed for specific applications and audiences.

Primary Destination Logo

The main Chino Valley tourism logo balances approachable friendliness with outdoor credibility. The design incorporates elements that speak to the area’s rolling hills and open landscapes while maintaining the welcoming, down-to-earth personality that makes Chino Valley special. This logo serves as the foundation for all tourism marketing materials, from the website header to promotional merchandise.

Outdoor Adventure (UTV) Logo

Recognizing that UTV and off-road recreation represents a major draw for Chino Valley visitors, we developed a specialized logo variation that speaks directly to this audience. The design emphasizes action, adventure, and the rugged outdoor experiences available throughout the area’s trail systems. This logo variation ensures Chino Valley can effectively market to the outdoor recreation community while maintaining brand consistency.

Placemaking Logo

For community use and local business applications, we created a placemaking logo that residents and business owners can proudly display. This variation emphasizes community identity and local pride, helping to build internal support for tourism initiatives while giving local businesses a way to participate in destination marketing efforts

Comprehensive Brand Guidelines

Beyond logo design, we established a complete brand system including:

  • Color palette inspired by Chino Valley’s natural landscape—earth tones that reflect the high desert environment while remaining vibrant enough for digital applications
  • Typography system that balances outdoor adventure credibility with friendly accessibility
  • Voice and tone guidelines that help the community communicate consistently across all tourism touchpoints
  • Usage guidelines ensuring brand consistency whether applied to billboards, social media, or promotional materials

The brand guidelines serve as a roadmap for maintaining consistent messaging and visual presentation as Chino Valley’s tourism initiatives grow and evolve over time.

Strategic Brand Positioning

Three Strategic Campaigns,
One Unified Message

Rather than trying to compete directly with Prescott’s established charm or Sedona’s mystique, our brand strategy positioned Chino Valley as the authentic alternative—the place where visitors can experience genuine outdoor adventure without the crowds, commercialization, or inflated prices of more established destinations.
“All Sky, No Crowd”

This campaign targets visitors seeking tranquility and space—remote workers, stargazing enthusiasts, and travelers looking for authentic small-town experiences. The messaging emphasizes Chino Valley’s wide-open spaces, dark skies, and genuine community character as alternatives to busy, commercialized tourist destinations.

“Your Outdoor Playground”

Targeting families and casual outdoor enthusiasts, this campaign positions Chino Valley as the perfect base camp for Northern Arizona exploration. The messaging emphasizes accessibility, family-friendly activities, and the variety of outdoor experiences available within a single destination. This approach appeals to visitors seeking outdoor adventure without extreme difficulty or crowd navigation.

“Paved Roads are Overrated”

This campaign speaks directly to off-road and UTV enthusiasts seeking authentic adventure experiences. The messaging celebrates the rugged, less developed aspects of Chino Valley that appeal to outdoor recreationists tired of crowded, over-commercialized destinations. Campaign tactics emphasize trail access, equipment-friendly businesses, and the freedom to explore without restrictions.

Each campaign provides a framework for ongoing marketing efforts while ensuring consistent messaging across different audience segments and marketing channels. This positioning strategy gives Chino Valley a clear, defensible market position that celebrates what the town already offers rather than trying to become something it’s not.

Multimedia Content Creation

Bringing Chino Valley’s Story to Life

Visual storytelling proved essential for communicating what makes Chino Valley special as a destination. Our multimedia content creation addressed the challenge many outdoor destinations face: how do you convey the feeling of a place through digital channels?

Primary Tourism Video

The main promotional video captures Chino Valley’s essence as “Arizona’s Outdoor Fun Place.” Rather than relying on sweeping drone footage alone, the video features real community members and authentic outdoor experiences—UTV adventures, local dining, stargazing opportunities, and the genuine hospitality that makes visitors feel welcome.

The video serves multiple purposes: website hero content, social media campaigns, and presentations to tourism boards and potential visitors.

Professional
Photo Library

A comprehensive photography collection documents everything from outdoor recreation opportunities to local business interiors and community events. This asset library ensures consistent, high-quality visuals across all marketing materials while providing local businesses with professional imagery they can use in their own marketing efforts.

Short-Form
Social Content

Recognizing that social media discovery drives much tourism decision-making, we created a library of short-form video content optimized for Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. These videos capture the spontaneous moments that make Chino Valley memorable. Each video reinforces the brand messaging while providing shareable content that extends the destination’s digital reach.

Content for Local Business Support

Beyond destination marketing, the multimedia content supports local business growth by providing professional assets business owners can use across their own marketing channels. This approach strengthens the entire tourism ecosystem rather than just promoting the destination in isolation.

MARKETING MATERIALS & CAMPAIGN ASSETS

Creating Tools for Tourism Growth

Effective destination marketing requires materials that work across multiple touchpoints and audiences. We developed a comprehensive suite of marketing assets designed to support both immediate visitor attraction and long-term tourism development.

Display Advertising

Digital display ads designed for placement across outdoor recreation websites, travel planning platforms, and geo-targeted social media campaigns. The ads emphasize Chino Valley’s positioning as the authentic alternative to crowded tourist destinations, featuring messaging like “All Sky, No Crowd” and “Your Outdoor Playground.”

Brand Kit for Community Use

A comprehensive brand kit provides local businesses, community organizations, and residents with approved logos, messaging guidelines, and marketing templates. This democratized approach to destination marketing ensures consistent brand presentation while enabling community-wide participation in tourism promotion efforts.

Promotional Merchandise

Branded stickers and promotional items that serve dual purposes: visitor souvenirs and local pride merchandise. These materials help build community buy-in for tourism initiatives while providing visitors with tangible reminders of their Chino Valley experience.

Billboard Design

Strategic billboard placement along major travel routes helps capture the attention of visitors traveling between Phoenix and established Northern Arizona destinations.

The billboard design balances brand recognition with clear calls-to-action, directing traffic to the tourism website for trip planning.

The design means Chino Valley materials stand out in crowded rack card displays while providing practical value to potential visitors.

WHAT MADE THIS WORK

Community-Driven Strategy Meets Professional Execution

Authentic Positioning
Over Aspiration

Instead of trying to compete with established destinations on their terms, we positioned Chino Valley based on what it authentically offers. This approach creates sustainable marketing messaging while celebrating the community’s existing character rather than attempting to manufacture a tourism persona.

Comprehensive System Thinking

Rather than treating individual marketing elements in isolation, we developed an integrated system where the brand strategy, visual identity, website, content, and promotional materials work together cohesively. This approach ensures consistent visitor experiences across all touchpoints while providing the community with a complete toolkit for tourism development.

Community Engagement & Buy-In

Successful destination marketing requires community participation. By involving local stakeholders in the brand development process and providing tools for local business participation, we created a tourism marketing approach that strengthens the entire community rather than just attracting visitors.

Scalable Foundation for Growth

The brand system and marketing materials provide a foundation that can grow with Chino Valley’s tourism development. Whether the town adds new attractions, businesses, or events, the brand framework can accommodate expansion while maintaining consistent messaging and visual presentation.
