What Are Google Ad Grants?

Google Ad Grants are part of Google for Nonprofits. The program provides qualifying organizations with in-kind advertising credit to run text ads on Google Search at no cost.

That means when someone searches for something connected to your organization’s mission—whether they’re looking for community resources, ways to volunteer, information about a cause, an upcoming event, or an organization to support—your nonprofit can potentially appear in the search results.

For organizations working with limited marketing budgets, the program can create a valuable opportunity to reach people who are already actively searching for information related to what they do.

Organizations can review Google’s Official Eligibility Requirements to see whether they qualify for Google for Nonprofits and the programs available through it.

But there are two common ways nonprofits can leave that opportunity on the table.

1. You’re Not Using Google Ad Grants at All

Your organization may be eligible for the program but hasn’t applied, activated its account, or built a strategy around it.

For U.S. organizations, Google generally requires organizations participating in Google for Nonprofits to have recognized 501(c)(3) status, along with meeting its other eligibility requirements. Certain organizations, including government entities, hospitals and healthcare organizations, and schools or universities, are generally excluded, although qualifying charitable arms or foundations may be eligible.

If you qualify and haven’t explored Google Ad Grants, there may be a significant advertising resource available to your organization that you simply aren’t using.

2. You Have the Grant, But You’re Not Making the Most of It

Having an active Google Ad Grants account doesn’t automatically mean your organization will use the full available budget—or that it should.

Google notes that the $10,000 monthly amount is a limit, not a guarantee of spend. Actual utilization can depend on factors including keyword search volume, competitiveness, ad quality, targeting, bidding strategy, and conversion data.

More importantly, using the full grant isn’t necessarily the goal. The goal is to use the available advertising dollars strategically to drive meaningful actions for your organization—whether that’s donations, event registrations, memberships, volunteer sign-ups, resource downloads, or other valuable conversions.

Effective Google Ad Grants management means focusing on the quality and relevance of that traffic, then continually optimizing campaigns around the actions that matter most to your organization.

Ongoing management also helps keep the account aligned with Google Ad Grants policies. For example, Ad Grants accounts that aren’t exclusively using Smart Campaigns must maintain at least a 5% account-level click-through rate (CTR) each month. Falling below that threshold for two consecutive months can result in temporary account deactivation.

$10K in Available Advertising Doesn’t Automatically Equal $10K in Value

A Google Ad Grant gives your nonprofit access to advertising. From there, your organization still needs to make strategic decisions about how to put that opportunity to work:

  • What should your organization promote?
  • What are your audiences actually searching for, and which searches signal real intent?
  • Where should people land after they click?
  • What counts as a meaningful conversion, and is tracking set up correctly?
  • Which campaigns are performing, and where are you missing opportunities?
  • How should campaigns change based on the data?

Those decisions determine whether your Google Ad Grants account is simply active or actively contributing to your organization’s goals.

And measurement isn’t optional if you want to understand that impact. Google requires active and accurate conversion tracking for applicable Ad Grants accounts, allowing organizations to measure meaningful actions such as donations, newsletter sign-ups, and volunteer registrations.

Getting the grant is step one. Making it work is the strategy.

Here’s what that can look like in action.

What Can Strategic Google Ad Grant Management Look Like?

Here’s one real-world example.

Mountain Mojo Group manages grant-funded Google advertising for a nonprofit organization. Through ongoing campaign strategy, search optimization, conversion tracking, and account management, the organization has generated:

  • $207K+ in grant-funded Google Ads utilized YTD*
  • 41,222 clicks
  • 1,427 conversions
  • −59% cost per conversion
  • −31% average cost per click
  • +5% conversions

Percentage changes are compared with the same period in the prior year.

The important part isn’t simply how much grant-funded advertising was utilized. It’s what happened alongside it: a 59% decrease in cost per conversion, a 31% decrease in average cost per click, and a 5% increase in conversions.

*Results from Jan. 1–Sept. 7, 2026, compared with Jan. 1–Sept. 7, 2025, for an anonymous Mountain Mojo Group nonprofit client. Grant availability, utilization, and results vary by organization, search demand, campaign strategy, website experience, market conditions, and other factors.

Year-to-date Google Ad Grants performance dashboard showing $207,718 in grant-funded ad spend, 41,222 clicks, 55,014 ad clicks, 1,426.94 conversions, and $33.19 cost per conversion, with a chart tracking cost and conversions over time.

The Goal Isn’t Just to Use More of the Grant. It’s to Use It Better.

That’s the difference between simply having access to an advertising resource and continually managing it with performance in mind.

Effective Google Ad Grants management isn’t just about helping an organization utilize more of its available advertising budget. It’s about making that advertising work harder: improving efficiency, reducing the cost of driving meaningful actions, and connecting more of the right people with the organization’s mission, programs, services, and resources.

More grant utilization can create more opportunity, but better performance is what makes that opportunity meaningful.

What Could Google Ad Grants Look Like for Your Organization?

You don’t need to be a Google Ads expert to start asking the right questions.

Start with this:

Does our organization qualify for Google Ad Grants?

If the answer is yes:

Are we already enrolled?

And if you’re already enrolled:

How much of the opportunity are we actually using, and what are we getting from it?

Your organization might discover that you have an untapped resource available. Or you may find that an existing account has room for stronger targeting, better tracking, improved landing pages, or more strategic campaign management.

Either way, the first step is understanding where you stand today.
