A few months ago, we told you all about the importance of quality photography to your business’ marketing efforts, and about the services and benefits a professional photographer can bring to the table that you might not get from an amateur (or doing it yourself). This time, we want to tell you about what professional videography can do for you and your business.

You might think that when it comes to the visual elements of your social media pages, online advertisements, or website, beautiful photographs are all you need to draw in visitors and new customers. While yes, gorgeous, professional photography is an excellent start, it’s not the end all be all to attracting the eye of a potential follower or customer. In an online world that is becoming increasingly video-based, we think you could benefit just as much, if not more, from including videography as a part of your visitors online experience.

One only needs to look at the increasing popularity of social media tools like Instagram stories and live streaming videos on platforms such as Facebook to realize that our online culture is moving beyond just text and static images as a way to inform and engage their content-hungry followers. Not to mention the fact that a 2018 Forbes article found that people better retained information from a video than from text, and that companies using a “video content experience” saw a 41 percent increase in web search traffic over those that didn’t. Another article from smallbiztrends.com suggested that the average business shared 18 videos per month in 2018, and with good reason, considering a report by HubSpot research showed that over 50% of consumers want to see more video content from brands (more than any other form of content). And, it’s expected that the role of video content in the marketing world will only continue to grow in the coming years.

A well-made video is a fun, captivating feast for both the eyes and ears, with the capacity to communicate a lot in a little amount of time in continually new and nuanced ways, without the consumer feeling like they have to do a lot of work to consume it. Plus, it gets people to stick around — on your website or social media page — longer than they normally would. Because they’re watching your awesome video!

Ever heard the phrase that a picture says a thousand words? Well, a video can say even more, and if you can find someone who knows what they’re doing, they can help you say it beautifully and clearly in a way that your audience can both understand and connect with.

Marketing Oriented Videos That Make the Most of the Medium

“Behind-the-Scenes”

Behind the scenes videos show your audience a side of your company they might not normally have access to, and makes them feel like an insider. This kind of video content has the power to build trust and develop a more intimate relationship with your audience through information, humor, and relatability.

For an example, here’s a behind-the-scenes video from travel vlogger Hey Nadine.

“Customer Service/Explainer”

There are lots of different types of the so-called “explainer” video, but they all revolve around the same concept, explaining something to your audience that might be interesting, helpful, or educational for them to know. What topic you focus on in your video can be directly related to a product or service your company offers, or it can be something completely different — as long as it still feels relevant to the types of people who might show an interest in your products and services.

Below are just a few examples of the “explainer” video genre:

  • “Educational/How-To”
  • “Tutorial”
  • “FAQ”
  • “Demo(nstration)”

For an example, check out this video we made that explains how the folks at Mountain Mojo Group design a logo

Or this video on how to make a Merry Holiday Mule Cocktail.

“Customer Testimonial”

These videos are like a written review, but even better, because your audience gets the chance to see the faces and hear the voices of the people who have had powerful, positive experiences with your company.

For an example, check out this collection of testimonials for Real Time Reviews.

Event

As you may already know from our blog post about experiential marketing, events are a great way for your company to reach out and connect with both current and potential customers (and raise the visibility of your company overall), but your event can be made even more effective if you are able to actually document it and have that footage available to share with others afterwards.

For an example, check out the video we made with Flagstaff Mall for their 2017 Holiday Flash Mob, performed by the Master Chorale of Flagstaff!

“Animated” and “Live” Videos

Although these last two types of videos could technically also apply to any of the above genres as well, we thought they were worth mentioning because we’ve seen an increasing popularity, and demand for, these kinds of videos in the past few years. In particular, people love “animated” explainer videos as a means to understand what may be complex or challenging material in a way that’s fun, colorful, and easy to grasp. “Live” video footage, on the other hand, lends itself particularly well to event videos. This way, even those who weren’t able to make it to your event in person can still experience it in real-time via their phone or computer screen.

For a great example on how an animated video could help you market your business, check out this great “explainer” video about the company DocuSign, or this adorable animated video from Southeastern Guide Dogs.

There are many more genres of video content, these are just a few we think could work especially well as a means to market your business. And while yes, some of them can be produced fairly easy on your own, we have found that in most cases, the skill and eye for detail a professional brings to the table can really make a big difference in creating beautiful, well-crafted videos that communicate with your audience in a way that is clear and creative.
